What is a gold award?
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting and is the most prestigious award in the world for high school girls. This award, unique to Girl Scouts, teaches girls to think critically, work cooperatively and identify resources within and beyond their local communities. The Gold Award requires a minimum of 80 hours of work on a project that has a sustainable and measurable impact.
how have i chosen to tackle food waste?
My name is Ella Diamond, and for my Gold Award, I have decided to tackle food waste on both the seller and consumer levels. Since restaurants have such a large contribution to food waste, I helped them donate their excess food by connecting them with a food rescue organization. This perfectly edible food then gets donated to after-school programs, homeless shelters, and senior citizen homes instead of going into landfills.
Although there has never been a lawsuit against a restaurant for donating food, restaurants are protected from liability through the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act.
For my project, I connected three Los Angeles restaurants with food recovery organizations. If you are a restaurant interested in participating, please contact me here.
In terms of fighting food waste on the consumer level, I have created fliers, spreading awareness online, and teaching younger Girl Scouts about this topic.
