Due to the fast-paced, consumer world we live in, we have created a "throw-away society". Whether it's that unnecessary plastic wrap surrounding your fresh apples or the sound of that last bruised apple hitting the bottom of the trash can, we are taught and encouraged to throw away everything.
However, the things you "throw away" still have a tremendous impact on the world, such as the potent greenhouse gases released by rotting food waste. In order to resist this "throw-away society," opt to buy locally-grown and whole foods. When food is not bought locally, the risk for food spoilage increases drastically, and processed food often does not utilize the nutrients as well.
Furthermore, becoming more aware of where your food comes from can also create a greater deal of appreciation towards it. When food is so easily disposed of, we often forget the power and energy it brings to our lives.
Next time you are eating a meal, challenge yourself to notice the texture, color, and smell of the food in order to increase your gratitude for what is in front of you.
