All over the country, hunger is prevalent. According to Feeding America, "millions of people struggle to get by because of underemployment, stagnant wages and rising costs of living." Overall, hunger affects 1 in 8 Americans.
Meanwhile, supermarkets and restaurants are responsible for 10% of food wasted. By donating this food to those who are food insecure, we as a society could be feeding those in need instead of feeding landfills. Many corporations and sellers, however, refuse to do this, as they believe that it could threaten their reputation by being sued from people becoming sick.
In reality, there has never been a lawsuit over donated food. Even if this did occur, donors are protected from liability by the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act of 1996.
